How to conserve resources
& lower your water bill

  • Check toilets for leaks by putting a few drops of food coloring into the tank. If the dye appears in the bowl after 15 minutes, this indicates a leak.
  • Repair dripping faucets.
  • Reducing your shower time by five minutes could save 1,000 gallons per month.
  • A full dishwasher is more water efficient than washing the same load by hand.
  • Energy efficient appliances are usually water efficient, too.
  • Wait until you have a full load of laundry before running the machine to save both water and energy.
  • Do not use the toilet as a garbage can to dispose of tissues, insects, etc.
  • Turn off the water when brushing your teeth or shaving.
  • Cut down on the amount of rinsing you do before loading the dishwasher.
  • Defrost frozen food in the refrigerator or in the microwave instead of running water over it.

How to conserve resources
& lower your energy bill

  • During the summer, set your thermostat to 78˚F or higher. Every degree below that setting will require 3-5% more electricity.
  • During the summer, close window shades and curtains to keep heat out.
  • To balance comfort and efficiency, set your thermostat to 68-70˚F when heating your home.
  • When you use glass cookware for baking, you can reduce the temperature by 25˚ F.
  • Change filters in air conditioning units at least once a month.
  • Check your windows and doors for a tight fit and apply weather stripping or caulking, if needed.
  • Run the dishwasher and wash/dry clothes early in the morning or late in the evening.
  • Run washing machines and dishwashers with full loads.
  • Turn off lights when you leave a room.
  • Run ceiling fans instead of air conditioning whenever possible.
  • Leave room in your refrigerator or freezer for cold air to circulate.
  • Minimize the amount of time you leave refrigerator and freezer doors open.
  • Keep your water heater set at the lowest temperature that still provides the amount of hot water you need.
  • When going on vacation, turn your water heater thermostat to low.
  • Turn off computers and televisions when not in use.
  • Using white lampshades helps make a room appear brighter.
